What is a BASTION, anyway?

Fort Victoria had two fortified log towers (called bastions) when it was founded in 1843 by the Hudson's Bay Company. A boom town grew around the fort during the gold rush in 1858 and stores, saloons, and a jail soon were built beside one of the towers.
Bastion Square was born.
